Grandparent-grandchild relationship test

The grandparent-grandchild test conducted by the DNA Center determines whether there is a biological (genetic) relationship between the child and the alleged grandparents (typically the paternal grandparents). The test establishes whether the tested grandparents are the biological grandparents of the tested child(ren), which also implies whether their child is the biological parent of the tested child(ren). While it is beneficial if both grandparents participate in the test, usually testing one grandparent is sufficient to examine the relationship.

How is the sample collected?

There is no need to visit a laboratory; sample collection can be done conveniently at home. Upon ordering the test, the DNA Center sends a specialized sample collection kit by mail. Using this kit, DNA samples can be collected easily and painlessly, typically via a cheek swab.

Steps for sample collection:

• Use the provided swab to gently rub the inside of the cheek (buccal mucosa), rotating the swab several times to collect cells.
• Place the swabs into the labeled sample envelope as per the included instructions.
• Return the samples, along with the completed data form and proof of payment, to the DNA Center via regular or priority mail to the address provided in the instructions. Alternatively, samples can be delivered in person to our office.

What does the sample collection kit include?

• Sampling tools for the number of participants in the test.
• One pre-labeled sample envelope per participant.
• A data form to be completed, signed, and returned with the samples. The form should include details such as the type of test requested, participant information (name or alias, and optionally date of birth), the date of sample collection, and instructions on how and where the results should be sent (email or postal address). It should also include the payer's name and address for invoicing purposes.
• Detailed guidance on the process (instructions for sample collection and form completion, the return address, and payment information).
• A yellow postal check if postal payment is chosen.

How long does it take to get results?

The laboratory analysis for the grandparent-grandchild test typically takes 10–12 days. Results are sent by mail and/or email.
