A Brief Overview of the Grandparent–Grandchild DNA-Based Lineage Test
Establishing biological paternity can sometimes be a complex matter, and it is often a much more difficult task than it sounds. It may happen that the alleged father is simply unavailable for some reason — his DNA sample cannot be tested. In such cases, a possible alternative is the grandparent–grandchild DNA test, which can clarify the biological relationship between the child and the grandparents on the alleged father's side, thereby making it possible to identify the child's biological father.
This test can also be used to investigate maternity if needed.
Why do people have a grandparent–grandchild DNA test performed?
The most common reason is to clarify whether they are in fact the child's biological grandparents or not. Usually some doubt has arisen that gives them no peace, and they simply want to know the truth — without endangering family harmony with the consequences of a potential investigation. Grandparents support their grandchildren emotionally (and financially) for many years — should any doubt arise, it is better to resolve it as soon as possible. Beyond peace of mind, family law and inheritance law considerations are also frequent reasons for clarifying the situation.
Clarifying the question of biological paternity through a grandparent–grandchild DNA test typically arises in the following situations:
- Health-related issues (hereditary diseases, predispositions)
- The alleged father has disappeared or died
- Inheritance and estate planning matters
- Questioning the child's father
- Resolving doubts that have arisen
How is this test performed?
The grandparent–grandchild DNA test is a more complex procedure than a traditional DNA-based paternity test. It is most reminiscent of a jigsaw puzzle: the more participants whose DNA can be tested, the more pieces become available for revealing the complete picture.
Whose DNA samples are needed to perform the test?
- One or both parents of the alleged father (the grandfather and, if possible, the grandmother as well)
- The child being tested (the grandchild)
- The child's mother, if possible
The result obtained is more accurate if the DNA of both grandparents (grandfather and grandmother) can be tested. However, the test can also be performed in the absence of one grandparent, but it is important to know that the accuracy of the results may be lower than in the two-grandparent version. If the child's mother can also take part in the test, the result will be even more accurate.
Collecting the DNA sample is simple and can be done at home; it is painless and causes no discomfort. The test requires the collection of oral mucosa epithelial cells (a "saliva sample"), and the collection procedure can easily be carried out by anyone using the instructions we provide.
IMPORTANT:
If the grandparent–grandchild lineage DNA test is being performed for official purposes, certified sample collection is required. This can be carried out at the Expert Office, or even at the home of the person being tested — a witness must verify that the DNA sample to be tested actually comes from the person whose details appear on the documents. In such cases, participants must identify themselves with photo ID, photographs are taken, and a record must be signed. An appointment for certified sample collection must be booked in advance by phone.
In the case of a minor child, the legal representative must give consent and be present at the certified sample collection.
The grandparent–grandchild DNA test can greatly help in clarifying the legal situation of grandparents. As a paternal grandparent, it is impossible to be certain whether the grandchildren are biological descendants or not. Alongside the love for one's grandchildren, in case of any doubt it can be important to clarify the matter as soon as possible — generally, the later the truth comes to light, the greater the damage caused (both emotional and financial). Fortunately, you now have the option to clearly resolve any questions that arise through a grandparent DNA test (even purely for your own peace of mind).
