The purpose of the DNA-based sibling test
The sibling test performed by DNS Központ tells you whether two people are half-siblings or full siblings. We carry out this test when the alleged father is not available, meaning a paternity test cannot be performed, and the alleged siblings would like to know — or an interested party would like to know about them — whether one or both of their parents really is shared.
DNS Központ performs two types of sibling tests:
- Half-sibling test. We carry this out when the alleged siblings believe they may share one biological parent (for example, they were definitely born to different mothers, but are curious whether their biological father is the same).
- Full-sibling test. We carry this out when one of the parents of the two siblings is definitely the same, and they would like to know whether the other parent is also the same (for example, they were definitely born to the same mother, and they are curious whether their biological father is also the same).
The subjects (participants) of sibling tests
Sibling tests in any case require the participation of the two alleged siblings. (Due to the complexity of the test, the simultaneous testing of more than two siblings is not possible.)
If the mother or mothers are available, it is very advantageous if they take part in the test. The sibling test is rather complex, and the mother's participation greatly facilitates the analysis. If the mother's DNA pattern is known, the lab effectively "subtracts" it from the child's pattern, allowing it to focus on the paternal markers.
If the mother or mothers are not available, we can run the sibling test without them as well. Such a test, however, requires a great deal of laboratory work and complex analysis, and is therefore more expensive and takes more time. Please call our customer service to discuss the details.
The results of the sibling test
The result of the sibling test is a combined sibling index, which tells you how likely it is that the two persons tested really are siblings. Due to the complexity of the test, the result is not as clear-cut as in the case of parent–child relationships, e.g. paternity.
The turnaround time for the sibling test is 21 days. The results are sent by post or by e-mail.
